Early Career Hydrogeology Conference

January 11, 2024

Before Christmas, two of our team’s Geologists Grace and Penny and Hydrogeologist Jo attended the Early Career Hydrogeology Conference held at Birmingham University

Jointly hosted by the Hydrogeological Group of the Geological Society London, the day was a valuable opportunity for Master’s students, PHD students, and Early Career Professionals (ECPs) in Hydrogeology to network, explore career opportunities, and gain insights from industry experts.

One of the highlights of the conference was the chance for attendees to not only hear from distinguished speakers, including Mark Lee (Head of Technology for Engineering Hydrogeology TGE) and Simiao Sun (Assistant Professor of Hydrogeology), but to engage and participate in technical and career workshops and discussions, ranging from engineering to groundwater and its societal impacts.

Grace also had the opportunity to showcase her research on the ‘Ecohydrological Implications of Climate Change on Cors Fochno’ during the afternoon’s poster session!

Grace commented:

"It was really great to get to go to the Early Careers Hydrogeologists Conference this year! There was a great line up of speakers and all of the talks were very interesting and informative. I also submitted a poster which focused on the impacts of climate change (specifically changes in sea level and rainfall) on coastal raised bogs. Using a case study, we showed that hydrogeological understanding of these systems supports the scale of impact on ground water from any future changes in flood management and can inform discussions with landowners and stakeholders on how this may affect the ecology and land use of these areas in the future."

By addressing current practices and future opportunities surrounding hydrogeology, the day was an invaluable opportunity for the team to share their knowledge with other delegates and professionals from across the industry to help progress in their career.
