Our client required our assistance to secure the necessary application and permits for the local dewatering of a large basement building at a former coal fired power station near Leeds.
The Challenge
The developer had overlooked recent regulatory changes, including the technical requirements for an abstraction licence and a discharge permit. Envireau Water stepped in to assist the client with their applications whilst finding a way to keep the development moving forward in the meantime.

Our specialist team's vast experience with the regulator allowed us to see a route through the challenges to complete the technical work missing whilst the applications were being allocated for determination.
We collaborated with our sister company RSK Geosciences to conduct thorough ground investigation to inform a Hydrogeological Impact Assessment (HIA),which outlined the dewatering’s impact on the surrounding water environment, and aH1 risk assessment to assess the impact of the discharge on the river quality. At the same time, local agreements were negotiated with the regulator to allow some abstraction and discharge of water whilst the applications were making their way through the system.
The Result
The time to obtain the authorisation from the regulator was minimised and a way was found to allow certain aspects of the development to proceed whilst the necessary authorisations were processed. The HIA and H1 assessments demonstrated negligible impacts, allowing Envireau Water to submit a robust technical work for the applications to the Environment Agency.
