The Challenge

Our client, Heronhill, were looking to increase their abstraction from the River Nar to provide more water for the irrigation of their crops.

Heronhill had an existing licence for water abstraction over the winter months, however its strict conditions did not permit abstraction when the flow of the river fell below a specified level, which prevented the abstraction of the full licensed quantity of water.

These licence conditions were in place to protect the ecological system for Brown Trout in the River Nar. The Environment Agency have closely monitored the River Nar and have invested in improvements to make the river a habitat in which the Brown Trout can thrive. The Environment Agency feared that changes to the river flow caused by abstraction at lower flows, would negatively impact the ecological system of the Brown Trout.

Heronhill contacted us to present a compelling and well documented case to the Environment Agency, in order to

secure the desired licence.

The Envireau Way

Our team used thorough data collection and robust science to present justified arguments to the Environment Agency, demonstrating that abstraction at lower river flows would not impact onthe Brown Trout’s ecology.

Envireau Water’s experience and expertise in regulatory negotiation and liaison over sensitive issues is what sets us apart from the crowd.

The Result

Envireau Water successfully modified the licence for Heronhill, allowing them to abstract water at lower flows, thereby enabling them to abstract their full licensed quantity over the winter months, for the irrigation of their crops.
