Last week, two of Envireau Water’s Hydrogeologists, Eileen Villasenor and Penny Jenkinson, attended the Urban Groundwater Conference at the Geological Society of London. The conference consisted of several talks, a poster session focussing on urban groundwater issues and the 2019 Ineson Lecture.

The main take home message from the day-long event was that urbanisation plays a key role in shaping how we manage and use groundwater. Information sharing and collaboration between professionals is essential for the management of groundwater in urban environments; and, as hydrogeologists, we need to work closely with other disciplines to further develop our investigation and evaluation approaches to tackle issues relating to urban groundwater.

Importantly, we should not write off our urban aquifers – as our population increases and cities grow, we need to think ahead to safeguard our urban groundwater resources.

Eileen commented:

“I recently completed an MSc in Hydrogeology and Water Management at Newcastle University. It was great to see my dissertation mentioned in one of the talks, learn about the many roles that hydrogeologists play in urban environments, and how that complements the projects I am now working on at Envireau Water.”

Penny went on to say:

“Attending these events is important CPD and a valuable networking opportunity for professionals at all stages of their career. The conference reinforced to me how academics, consultants and regulators all have an important role to play in the successful management of urban groundwater systems.”
