Less Is More When It Comes to Monitoring Schemes

June 19, 2020

Envireau Water provides expert guidance on design, management and regulatory issues relating to natural water systems.

Many people believe that surface water and groundwater monitoring schemes are straightforward to design and manage. Such an approach often leads to schemes which are not fit for purpose, are too large and are expensive to operate. Envireau Water believes that #LessIsMore. Properly designed systems, which are based on a thorough understanding of the system being monitored, the objective of the monitoring, how the data will be used and the audience that the data will be presented to, are invariably more focused, smaller and cheaper to operate than badly designed systems.

Envireau Water has extensive experience of designing and managing new schemes, as well as re-designing existing schemes to make them fit for purpose and cheaper to operate. In one case, the re-design of a large quarry related scheme resulted in about a 30% saving in annual monitoring costs, totaling over £12,000/year as well as the removal of about 25% of the monitoring locations, saving maintenance costs. The scheme was re-designed to target the technical issues that mattered, and the regulators re-focused so that precious resources were not being wasted.
